I joined the British Fantasy Society
There comes a point in every writer’s life, when you feel the need to join something. Few of us are living in lonely garrets, riddles with woodworm and TB. Not that garrets get TB; you know what I mean (Insert smiley emoticon). I felt the need to commune with other writers.
What to join though? There are lots of societies and guilds you can join, once you need to think about evil publishers, contracts and copyright issues. Most will grudgingly accept self-published writers under some sort of acolyte/minion scheme, but they weren’t for me.
Where were the groups who loved writing and their genre? Where were the enthusiasts who wrote, not for money, but for the love of it?
At this point I feel the need to add a caveat. If you are an evil publisher who wants to make me rich and arrange for Johnny Depp to appear in a film of my book…. Ignore everything I just said (insert even bigger smiley).
In the end I decided to join the British Fantasy Society (Link at end of article). They’re run by volunteers, run lots of competitions, have functions and seemed just my kind of people. Best of all and often overlooked…. They weren’t that expensive to join (insert sly emoticon).
